Rainbows are one of nature’s most beautiful delights! They come out during a rainfall, or just after, and provide a stunning backdrop to everything that surrounds it! But, have you ever really looked at a rainbow? Could you name all of the colors that are in one? Or better yet, name them all in order?
The order of rainbow colors
Many people use a mnemonic to remember the colors of the rainbow. A mnemonic is just an abbreviation that usually spells out another word, in order to remember something easily and quickly. In the case of the colors of the rainbow and their order, the mnemonic that most people use is: ROY G BIV. Each of these letters stands for one of the colors. The order of the colors are: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.
The science of the colors
Have you ever wondered how rainbows are able to have the exact same colors, in the same exact same order each and every time? Well, Mother Nature is a beautiful thing, but she’s not solely responsible for the order of rainbow colors. When sunlight gets trapped in raindrops, it bends and twists and gets distorted into different colors. These colors span the entire spectrum of colors and because the spectrum of colors is always the same and always in the same order, so too are rainbows and their colors!
